LCTTP announces Web Management Certificate Program
09/28/2005
The Libraries, Computing, and Technology Training Program (LCTTP) has announced a new series of certificate tracks available for people working on Web sites. The tracks include courses to cover the roles of Content Manager, Web Designer, and Web Developer.
More and more people are being asked to maintain Web sites for their units, despite having limited experience in the Web field. LCTTP created this Web Management Certificate program to provide a coherent approach to training.
Survey leads to improvement of the certificate program
LCTTP recently conducted a survey and received fifty-two responses from the MSU Web community, many with detailed recommendations about the nature of the program.
The feedback has been used to help restructure the certificate tracks to better fit the MSU community. So far, changes to the Web Content Editor I certificate include:
• Adding “XHTML Web Authoring” as an alternative to “Contribute: Web Page Editing – Level 1”
• Removing graphics courses from the list of electives
• Adding “Adobe Acrobat 7.0 – Level 1” and “Creating Flexible Documents” as electives
• Adding a hands-on exercise on optimizing graphics for the Web to the “Fundamentals of Web Development” course
LCTTP staff will make additional changes as they continue to develop the certificate program.
LCTTP instructor Anne Hunt expressed the group’s appreciation for the advice that customers gave in their survey responses: “I’m very flattered that so many people took the time to participate and help us out.”
Three new courses and a course revision announced
In addition, LCTTP has prepared three new courses that are included in the certificate program:
• “Principles of Web Writing”
• “Visual Design & Layout”
• “Dreamweaver: Building Forward Compatible Web Sites”
The “Web Design & Usability Techniques” class has also been revised. It is now a one-day class and has been refocused to include up-to-date examples and techniques. Students will even have an opportunity to engage in a mock usability test, in class.

vuDAT Announces New Design and Technology Tool
09/17/2005
MSU’s Virtual University Design and Technology (vuDAT) team presents Design and Technology tools or “DAT” tools for short. DAT Tools are interactive tools that assist and enhance the teaching and learning experience across academic disciplines.
DAT Tools are easy to use: They avoid over-complexity by providing only one or two core functions. These functions have been singled out because they add pedagogical and informational richness to online and hybrid courses, as well as academic websites.
What is labelDAT? Now a picture can be worth more than a thousand words. The purpose behind this first in a series of Design and Technology (DAT) tools is to provide the MSU teaching community with a tool to label images. Labeling increases the information density and pedagogical value of images used in online educational situations. labelDAT reflects vuDAT’s objective to provide professional and innovative technology enhanced teaching and learning solutions in support of the Michigan State University mission.
Use your MSU NetID and password to login and try labelDAT at http://labeldat.vudat.msu.edu.
Live Example: To see a live example, click here: http://labeldat.vudat.msu.edu/viewer/index.aspx?project_id=552
vuDAT staff members and developers of labelDAT, Andy Detskas and Ben Rhodes, will present a Brown Bag Session titled “Enhancing MSU Courses with Flash-driven Animation and Interactivity” on September 23, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM in room 105 Natural Science Building. The presentation will culminate with the introduction and demonstration of this unique tool, and suggest possible applications for its use. Here is more information on the Brown Bag series.
This is one of the many ways that vuDAT has been helping to provide innovative teaching and learning solutions. If you are teaching online or have a hybrid course that would benefit from vuDAT’s tools or expertise then please call us (517) 432-0711 or email us at firstcontact@mail.vudat.msu.edu with your questions and ideas.
Don’t Be Locked Out! Change Your Password before 9/27/2005
09/09/2005
All users of MSU NetIDs must change their passwords before September 27 in order to avoid being locked out of ANGEL, StuInfo, mail.msu.edu, the Human Resources system, and a wide variety of online academic and administrative services. Anyone who has not changed his or her password since May 11 will lose access to essential online MSU services.
On May 11, 2005, MSU improved its system for authenticating users of online services. If you changed the password that goes with your MSU NetID on or after May 11, you should have no login problems on September 27. If you wait until September 27 and you become locked out, you will have to reset your password using your PID and PAN.
To change your password, please visit http://netid.msu.edu and select “Change password.”
If you don’t remember when you last changed your password, it’s safe to change it again at any time. You can even reset your password to what it is already — but you must use the NetID “Change Password” function before September 27.
