July 21 Computer Center Power Upgrade Completed as Scheduled

06/30/2006

[Note: The July 21, 2006 Computer Center power upgrades were completed as scheduled. This article originally appeared under the title "Computer Center Power Upgrades Will Cause Service Interruptions." -- ed.]

On Friday, July 21, Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) will
oversee Phase II of electrical system upgrades at the Computer Center.
This work will require a complete shutdown of electrical service in
the Computer Center machine room. As a result, many core computing and
networking services will be unavailable starting at 6:00 p.m. Barring
unforeseen problems, all core services will be restored by 11:00 p.m.

Phase III of power upgrades is scheduled for Friday, August 4, also from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. We expect similar service interruptions at that time.

During these planned power outages we anticipate that access to the campus network and to the Internet will remain available. However, a number of core online services will be shut down. These include:

• afs.msu.edu
• angel.msu.edu
• lon-capa.msu.edu
• magic.msu.edu
• mail.msu.edu
• MSUnet Wireless

The virtual Web hosting service that ACNS operates, w3vh, will be down during the power shutdown; therefore any Web site hosted on w3vh also will be down.

For more information, including a more complete list of services that
will be affected, please see the computing knowledge base article with details of this scheduled outage.

Phase I of Computer Center power improvements took place on March 5, 2005. These ongoing power upgrades will improve the reliability and capacity of essential electrical services, and will set the stage for flexibility to respond to emergencies. ACNS strives to schedule these necessary power upgrades for dates and times that minimize the effects on the university community.
