August 4 Power Upgrade Was Completed Successfully

07/25/2006

[Editor's note: Phase III of electrical work was completed as scheduled.]

On Friday, August 4, Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) will oversee Phase III of electrical system upgrades at the Computer Center. This work will require a complete shutdown of electrical service throughout the entire Computer Center, including the machine room. As a result, many core computing and networking services will be unavailable starting at 6:00 p.m. Barring unforeseen problems, all core services will be restored by 11:00 p.m.

During this planned power outage we anticipate that access to the campus network and to the Internet will remain available. However, a number of core online services will be shut down. These include:

• afs.msu.edu
• angel.msu.edu
• lon-capa.msu.edu
• magic.msu.edu
• mail.msu.edu

The virtual Web hosting service that ACNS operates, w3vh, will be down during the power shutdown; therefore any Web site hosted on w3vh also will be down.

Note that unlike the July 21 outage, we anticipate that MSUnet Wireless service will remain available during this power shutdown.

This is Phase III of a set of planned improvements to replace antiquated electrical equipment in the Computer Center machine room. Phase I took place in March of 2005 and Phase II took place July 21, 2006. The next outages for power improvements will be scheduled for dates in December.

For more information, including a more complete list of services that
will be affected, please see computing knowledge base article 7207 with details of this scheduled outage.

These ongoing power upgrades will improve the reliability and capacity of essential electrical services, and will set the stage for flexibility to respond to emergencies. ACNS strives to schedule these necessary power upgrades for dates and times that minimize the impact on the university community.
