New MSU Virtual Private Network Service

04/26/2007

MSU SSL Virtual Private Network (VPN) now employs VPN products from Juniper Networks. Users of the service need to log in to https://vpn.msu.edu and install a Java applet in order to connect. This service is provided for MSU faculty and staff.

The new service creates a secure “tunnel” between each user’s computer and the MSU campus network. Until the VPN session ends, all Internet traffic from a user’s computer will be routed through the MSU SSL VPN, regardless of destination.

Please note that traffic between the Computer Center and other sites on campus will not be encrypted by the MSU SSL VPN; system administrators should ensure that other means of encryption, such as HTTP SSL, are employed as needed.

The previous Cisco-based VPN service that ACNS operates will be removed from service on Monday, June 4, 2007. ACNS will send e-mail notification to those who have used the Cisco service since January 1, 2007.

Dial-up Internet services to end July 2, 2007

04/26/2007

ACNS and Merit Network have worked together for many years to provide dial-up Internet access for MSU faculty, staff, students, and retirees. Many users, however, have stopped using dial-up in favor of high-speed alternatives.

As a result, Merit Network will discontinue the following services on Monday, July 2, 2007:
- Michigan dial-up access (local phone numbers across the state)
- Toll-free dial-up access (national 800 number)
- Global dial-up access (international numbers)

Merit’s decision to discontinue these services, combined with declining use, leads us to conclude that it is no longer viable for us to provide these services to the MSU community. For the time being, however, ACNS will continue to provide dial-up service in the Lansing/East Lansing local calling area (517-999-2678).
