Keeping Private Data Private:

What MSU is doing to protect privacy

June 6 , 2006

Protecting the confidential and sensitive information MSU collects and uses for its employees, students, patients, patrons, research, and other institutional information is a stewardship responsibility we all share.

On June 14, 2006, the MSU Controller's Office, Internal Audit, and Libraries, Computing and Technology held a campus-wide "Town Hall" meeting on managing sensitive data (MSD). The MSD Town Hall meetings are open to everyone in the MSU community. They include presentations on managing sensitive data as well as an opportunity to discuss this topic in an open forum. During the June 14 Town Hall meeting, attendees learned how central units on campus are updating business practices and using information technology to ensure sensitive data they collect remains secure. The approach taken by these units offers opportunities and lessons learned for any activity that involves the use of sensitive information.

Panelists discussed and fielded questions on how they have implemented MSD action plans to comply with new laws and policies, and remediation and process improvement adjustments made in their business practices and IT infrastructure to ensure data privacy. Representatives from MSU's Administrative Information Services, the Cashier's Office, Controller's Office, Human Resources & Academic Human Resources, Office of Admissions & Scholarships, and University Development participated. A live webcast of the event is available at wmsu.org.
