Access Files Anytime, Anywhere with NetFiles

Netfiles is an online service that allows MSU students, faculty, and staff access to files stored on their file storage space (AFS) from anywhere in the world. AFS space can be used for backing up important data files such as term papers or dissertations, remotely storing files, or for hosting websites. Documents on AFS can be uploaded to NetFiles and accessed from any computer with Internet access and a web browser. It is a web-based, graphical user interface used to upload, download, and delete files or copy, paste and rename files or folders. Publishing web sites, backing up critical files, and collaborating with colleagues both on and off campus is fast, simple, and secure with Netfiles.

What is AFS and How Does Netfiles Work?

Every student is allocated 100MB of central network storage called Andrew File Storage (AFS), which provides online file storage to keep computer files such as class papers, spreadsheets, applications, or anything else that conforms to the campus Acceptable Use Policy. NetFiles provides:

NetFiles is a storage device, just like a computer’s hard drive or a floppy disk. The NetFiles web interface is used to upload (add files to NetFiles) and download (save to a computer). NetFiles is not a file editor, so changes to files must be done using other applications (e.g. Microsoft Word or Adobe InDesign).

Getting Started

To use Netfiles, read the Netfiles knowledge base article or contact the ACNS Help Desk at (517) 432-6200 or e-mail help@msu.edu

Training

Face-to-face training on NetFiles is available through the Libraries, Computing, and Technology Training Program (LCTTP). AFS – File Space, an introductory course on AFS includes training on Netfiles. For more information or to sign up for the course, visit the LCTTP webpage at www.train.msu.edu
